Darwin the elder statesman of science, is the image we are most familiar with. But the roots of his genius can be found closer to his origins.

His experiences on the voyage of The Beagle provided Charles Darwin with a lifetime of ideas but his early years in Shrewsbury provided the perspective that allowed the young naturalist to exploit the opportunity as perhaps none of his contemporaries could have.

My lecture singles out three key influences, encountered in his home town, that laid the foundations for his greatest work.
